Here's why special effects features suck these days: no sense of wonder. There's just no magic to speak of anymore, because everything is done with computers. Everything.
I used to love watching making-of movies; they were full of people building sets, going to weird locations and of course my favorite: the often excitable and wild-haired Gyro Gearlooses making weird and wonderful things come to life with q-tips and ingenuity. I mean, the speeder bike sequence from Return of the Jedi? No computers, just like the good Queen albums.
These days, it's just some dude in front of a Mac Pro talking about rendering speeds. Who cares? Now get off my lawn.
